This event explored a WPS approach to human security issues in the Caribbean, highlighting thematic issues such as crime and violence, human mobility, climate insecurity, social cohesion, and gender-based violence and discrimination in the Caribbean.
Co-sponsored by the UN Women Multi-Country Office – Caribbean, The Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund, and The Governments of the United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti, participants discussed:
-
Women’s meaningful participation and leadership in prevention and response as key to sustainable peace and security in CARICOM and globally.
-
The development of a Caribbean Regional Action Plan and the strategic benefits of appointing a CARICOM WPS Envoy to advance the WPS agenda.
-
The urgency of regional and global women’s movements to increase gender responsive political and peace processes in the region, drawing from the Haitian experience.
The government of Trinidad and Tobago, a partner of the event, also announced the upcoming launch of its inaugural National Action Plan — the first WPS NAP in the Caribbean. Key to this process was the OSF Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan Academy's inaugural convening in May 2024 that built on Trinidad and Tobago's legacy of women's rights activism, and demonstrated political will through champions including women parliamentarians and civil society.
